On Monday I talked about the basis for great skin, your skincare routine. Nothing beats radiant, glowing skin! But sometimes life likes to be a jerk and your hormones get all out of whack or you just have problematic skin. Those times can be so frustrating, emotionally and physically. For those of us that don’t have the option to hibernate until we feel comfortable enough to see people, we have to depend on makeup!
There are so many products out on the shelves so how do you know what you should and shouldn’t use?!?! A lot of that depends on your individual skin needs. I always will tell y’all that you need to figure out what is best for YOUR skin.
I also want to talk about the products I choose to use on a daily basis real quick. They are mostly if not all organic lines, with that being said they do tend to cost a little bit more. It is the one area that I will spend a little extra on to make sure I’m putting something great on my face. I also know that’s not how everyone feels so I am going to try my absolute best to let y’all know about products that cover a wide price range. You should also know my collection has taken a long time to accumulate, so don’t think you have to overhaul everything all at once. It can be a progression.
Let’s touch on a few ingredients basics. You want to be aware of ingredients that can actually help your acne throughout the day. If you see it in your makeup you can be comfortable wearing it all day because it should be helping not harming.
- Jojoba oil: This is a great ingredient to look for in any foundation or concealer. Jojoba oil is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredient. It also dissolves into your pores to help clean out any gunk that’s residing in there. If this is in your products it’s a good sign.
- Coconut oil: Coconut oil is another natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredient. It also is a natural source of Vitamin E. Vitamin E, is beneficial to ensuring your sebum is functioning properly. That is crucial to any skin care, especially if you are more on the oily side.
- Aloe: This plant is a great additive to any skin care product. Like the previous ingredients it’s a natural antibacterial and antifungal. Aloe has the potential to aide in collagen production which is crucial to healing acne scars.
- Lavender Hydrosol: Lavender is great for balancing out combination skin, it provides moisture to the dry areas and helps control oil production in the well, oily areas.
- Arrowroot Powder: This is a great ingredient to find in your powders. It gives the powder the ability to not dry your skin out throughout the day and it can be used to heal wounds. I will touch on this a little bit more further down the blog.
There you have it, a brief look at some powerhouse ingredients you typically want to see in your makeup. Let’s move on to the recommendations.
I don’t want to tell you how to put on your makeup, there are a lot of sites that do a way better job than I would. One of my favorites is Em Ford’s website, My Pale Skin Blog. What I want to do is give you suggestions on products that have made a difference in my fight with acne.
If you are experiencing breakouts you will want to go through your AM routine, but before you apply your sunscreen or moisturizer you will want to spot treat with an acne serum. One of the best I have found on the market, that works wonders on cystic acne, is Renee Rouleau’s Anti-Cyst Treatment. She has a Daytime Blemish Gel, but I’ve found that her cyst treatment works just as well and has double the function.
For my foundation I’ve been loving (and that means I’ve bought refills) Kjaer Weis foundation. This is a super versatile base. It can be as light or as heavy as you’d like it. It can also double as a concealer. It’s a miracle pot of color. It also wears well throughout the day. I have to touch up a few oily areas towards the evening, but I love the natural look it gives my skin. It also does NOT clog your pores! My previous foundations would move into my pores for the summer and not leave until they deposited a blackhead. This does not congest your skin at all. ( I will be trying a new foundation from FitGlow Beauty soon so be on the look out for an update on foundation).
Every good foundation, needs a concealer. I have two that have taken a permanent spot in my drawer. The first is Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, and the second is Glossier’s Stretch Concealer. Both of these work wonderfully together to provide the most epic cover up possible. Glossier has burst onto the skincare scene and I’m loving everything! So you’ll be seeing more reviews of their products in the future.
To make sure all your work stays put throughout the day you need a good setting powder. Powder also can help cover up your acne. As I mentioned earlier arrowroot powder can be used to heal wounds. Have you ever had those breakouts that you just picked at too much and caused a woozing mess on your face?!?! Well I have, frequently and no matter how much I wish wearing a paperbag on your face was a fashion statement, it’s not. These are the moments my fairy godmother pops out and helps me cover up the mess. To do so I rely on Hynt Beauty’s powders. A main ingredient is arrowroot powder so I know that it’s not only covering up my mess, but it’s healing it throughout the day. Powder is great for the messy acne areas due to its absorbent properties.
I love blush! It can change your look drastically with just a touch of color. It’s also fun to experiment with colors that would be out of your normal range. I would have never tried a blush that leans more towards the orange spectrum, but it is one of my absolute favorites to give my skin a touch of that healthy, rosy glow. For my blush and highlighting needs I also go to Kjaer Weis. Their wide range of colors just makes me so happy. And like their foundation, the color stays put. It almost becomes your skin and moves with it as the days goes on. Another blush, and product line I would recommend is Antonym Cosmetics. Their baked blushes are a highlighter, blush, and bronzer all in one. So if one step is your game, you will defiantly want to check their products out.
Jeeper creepers look at those peepers!!!! I don’t leave the house without either eyeliner or mascara. One of my favorite organic make up switches has been my mascara. Per-Fekt brand has made an outstanding volumizing mascara that stays put all day and does NOT flake, I repeat it does NOT flake. For eyeliner I love Antonym’s Certified Eye Pencil in Noir. It gives you a light, easy look or it can go drastic Hollywood glam. For your eyebrows Glossier has created a three in one brow product that will rock your socks off. It’s called the Boy Brow and it will seriously replace your eyebrow pencil, and eyebrow setting gel. The icing on top of the cake is eye shadow. I made a recent discovery of gorgeous eye shadows that provide long lasting color and TLC to your eyelids. RMS is an outstanding brand, with over the top products. My two new favorite eye shadows are their Seduce, and Lunar Eye Polishes.
Lastly, let’s pucker those lips. Now I’m going to give my typical day to day lip recommendations. Every once in awhile I do love rocking the red lip or a dark maroon. But for a more laid back lip, sometimes a natural look is all you need. In comes Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Peach. Trust me, even though it’s orange your pout will be a perfectly just kissed color that will make you dewy fresh and fabulous. I also love Glossier’s Generation G, it has the feel of a gloss but goes on more matte. Another winner from Glossier is their Balm DotCom in Cherry, Rose, and Mint. The cherry and rose balms have hints of color for a super all natural look with a pop.
Each product has been hyperlinked to the direct website. If you are looking for a one stop shop I highly recommend Citrine Natural Beauty Bar. They are a group of lovely ladies out of Arizona who really, really know their stuff. Not to mention that your orders are almost out the door before you receive the confirmation email.
